In 2025, Macau's casinos generated gross gaming revenue (GGR) of MOP247.4 billion (US$30.84 billion), more than twice the size of the Las Vegas Strip, maintaining their status as the world's gambling capital.

The amount of money a casino keeps after paying out winners is known as gross gaming revenue. The GGR for the six gaming operators in the Chinese enclave increased by 9.1% in 2025 compared to the previous year, a gain of around $2.5 billion.

December casino winnings increased 14.8% year over year to $2.6 billion as the year came to an end. The sixth-strongest GGR month for the market in 2025 was December.

Following a sluggish start to the year, with a 5.6% decline in GGR in January, the next 11 months of 2025 were all better than those of 2024. October, when GGR surpassed $3 billion—the richest gaming month since pre-pandemic 2019—was the year's high point.

Macau Comeback In 2025, Macau surpassed all predictions. When Beijing closed the junket business that attracted high rollers from the mainland to Macau a year ago, analysts questioned how the Chinese Special Administrative Region (SAR) would handle having a lot fewer VIPs in town.

Macau's need that the concessionaires invest billions of dollars in non-gaming projects as part of their 10-year license extensions significantly complicated the operating environment for Sands, Galaxy, MGM, Wynn, Melco, and SJM. Macau sought to diversify its economy and move away from its strong reliance on casino gaming by using the 2022 relicensing.

Macau is aiming to improve its appeal as a tourism destination for families, leisure travel, business, and conventions, just like Las Vegas did many years ago. 2025 exceeded the $30 billion analyst consensus estimate. The $30.8 billion haul was the biggest annual figure in the COVID-19 aftermath and accounted for 84.7% of the market's 2019 pre-pandemic GGR total.

By switching from VIP to premium mass and mass market gamers, the casinos have demonstrated their tenacity. These gamers continue to wager hundreds of dollars on each baccarat hand.

The silver side is that lower market players are more successful off the casino floor because opulent incentives aren't as easily afforded, even though the resorts had undoubtedly wanted to keep their junket ties. Naturally, however, in order to compensate for the lost VIP casino revenue, the casinos require a lot more premium and mass market patrons.

Outlook for 2026

With China's economy improving and mainlanders appearing more inclined to visit, Macau's momentum is expected to last until 2026. The epidemic is now largely unimportant.

"Macau remains a secular growth story, driven by an increasing wealth effect in China with high propensity to gamble and increasing travel spend,” said Seaport Research Partners Global Gaming Senior Analyst Vitaly Umansky.

“We continue to see Macau as a secular long-term growth market,” Umansky added.
